Christine Ollis (Wilhelm) Matthews

Christine Matthews, 93, of Bruceton Mills (Hazelton community) died June 20, 2026 at the Kingwood Healthcare Center. She was born on September 14, 1932 in Kingwood, WV, the youngest child of Foster and Edna Child Wilhelm. She was the last remaining member of her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Paul R. Matthews, and her companion of 23 years, Carlus P. Ringer. Also preceding her were three brothers, Wallace of Kingwood; Foster, Jr. of Kanes Creek and Charles of Hampton, VA and three sisters, Virginia, who died as an infant, Lorraine Lewis of Memphis, TN, and Maxine Wilhelm of Kingwood. She was also preceded in death in December 2021 by granddaughter, Janet Hoover Resh Fawley, and in March 2026 by great grandson, Hunter Hoover.

Christine was an avid deer hunter and an excellent quilter. She sold numerous quilts over the years. Perhaps she was best known by her family and friends for her ability to run a power saw. She was cutting her own firewood well into her 80s. She loved to sing and attended Rush Baptist church and Serving Jesus Bible Study.

Surviving are three daughters, Loretta (Floyd) Hoover and Margie Hoover of Friendsville, MD, and Shirley Metheny of Hazelton, WV; one son, Larry "Joe" (Carolyn) Matthews of Hazelton, WV. She was a loving grandmother to seven grandchildren; Sherry (Aaron) White, Brian Hoover, Robert Hoover, Amy (Ty) Martin, Erin (Chuck) Gregory, and Tobby Metheny. Christine also had twelve great grandchildren; Gabriella "Ellie" and lan White, Tyler and Cody Resh, Zachery and Katie Martin; Kiersten Matthews; Keely Gregory; and Matthew, Sarah and Katie Metheny, and Hunter Hoover. She was also blessed with two great-great grandsons; Nash Martin and Kaiden Resh. She was beloved Aunt Chris to many nieces and nephews.
